I have received the question so many times, I think I recite it in my sleep: how in the (insert colorful term) do you afford to go to these places? Well that’s a great question to answer hundreds of times. Sometimes, I will give a serious answer, but for those of you who know me, know that I would rather come up with some of smart-alec answer. This blog will be a tad shorter and in list form because of time constraints. But here are some of the ways I have come up with the money to take these trips.
Blood money: no, I am not some contract hit -woman, but I do truly make money on blood, well, plasma. For the past 5 years I have been donating at Bio Life Plasma Services. It not only saves lives, but it’s quick (less than an hour) and I get paid about 70 bucks tax free each week.
Budgeting like a mad woman- I rock the Ramen meals like no other, 10 cents for dinner? Yes please! It is extremely important to set a budget and stick to it. I have a set budget of 20 dollars a week for food, and usually I go under that. I also live with relatives. Yes, it would be nice to have a place of my own, but that is an expenditure that would hinder a lot of traveling. Plus, my relatives are pretty cool to live with (Thanks, Grandma).
Roadside pick up- if you are fortunate to live in a state with paid recycling then you’re in luck. The spring thaw will be coming soon, and that means all those pop bottles hidden in those snow piles along the road are free for the picking. Helpful hint: don’t get hit by cars, don’t go on private property, wear gloves, and for the love of all that is good wash your hands!
Friends: the next one is touchy, it’s not polite to just say “Hey, dude, I’m coming to your city and sleeping on your couch.” But if your friends know that you love to travel maybe they’d be willing to let you crash at their place, or at least they can possibly show you to some of the local places so that you can see the area without spending too much money on the tourist hot spots.
Next week’s post will be similar but it will be budgeting WHILE traveling.
